As we wrap up our awesome Harriet Tubman challenge as part of Black History month, we’re excited to shift focus toward a topic of health & wellness that compliments regular daily activity.

While it’s hard for a step challenge app to pass up “marching” jokes, we’re taking this month to convey different wellness information.

March is National Nutrition Month. With the approach of Spring, daylight savings time, and a return to normalcy at work; it’s also a great time to reflect on those New Years’ resolutions or our desires for a healthier life.

According to the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics, there are several key ways to address nutrition to invest in yourself. Read on for ways that a fresh take on nutrition can improve your life:

Discover the benefits of a healthy eating style.

Healthy eating patterns have been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, also known as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, and obesity. Feel better, live longer, and be happier with a more nutritional lifestyle.

Choose foods and drinks that are good for your health.

A balanced diet with enough nutrition to fuel your body is key. In today’s landscape, though, it’s often hard to tell which items are actually healthy and which ones are a figurative wolf in sheep’s clothing, hiding artificial sweeteners and unhealthy ingredients inside of food that’s marketed as “healthy.”

Be mindful of portion sizes.

Eat and drink the amount that’s right for you. To get a start on basic healthy foods and for an easy way to identify correct portion sizes, there’s a resource available at ChooseMyPlate.gov.

Keep it simple.

Eating right doesn’t have to be complicated. Good nutrition comes as a series of small choices, not one major wholesale change that immediately fixes everything. Pick some healthy items that you like, prepare them in the right sizes, and stick with the plan.

Find activities that you enjoy and be physically active.

Of course, we had to add this. Physical activity is even more powerful in conjunction with a healthy diet, and we encourage you to take a walk to help your body mobilize those nutrients and start building a better you.

Consult nutrition experts.

If you’re looking to go the extra mile, it’s always a great idea to include a professional nutritionist. Nutritionists can provide sound, easy-to-follow personalized nutrition advice to meet your lifestyle, preferences, and health needs.

Here, we’re happy to recommend Christa King. King is Fitlandia founder & CEO, Walker Tracker user, fitness advocate, and nutrition expert.

“Good nutrition is one of the Four Cornerstones of Fitness we incorporate in Fitlandia, along with daily movement, practicing mindset mastery, and community connection. Without all four of these components in play, making a lifestyle change is challenging. But with a foundation in fueling your body well, everything else can fall into place easily.”

Measure it

“When performance is measured, performance improves. When performance is measured and reported back, the rate of improvement accelerates.” – Pearson’s Law

In order to get the right quality and quantity of nutrition, it’s crucial to track the food we eat throughout the day. To do that, we advise logging the foods you eat in a nutrition log. There are many great options, including special books & notebooks, spreadsheet templates, and nutrition tracking mobile applications. Apps like HealthyOut can help you monitor restaurant food, a notoriously difficult task.

For companies that include Walker Tracker as part of their approach to employee well-being, Walker Tracker has an add-on that further increases health & happiness.
